On August 4, 2024, at approximately 12:20 a.m., emergency services including members from Elgin OPP, St. Thomas Detachment, Elgin-St. Thomas Emergency Medical Services (EMS) along with Central Elgin Fire and Emergency Services responded to a single-vehicle collision involving a passenger vehicle that became engulfed in flames after striking a hydro pole on Fruit Ridge Line near Sunset Road, Municipality of Central Elgin.
The driver exited the vehicle prior to the fire and no serious injuries were reported.
While speaking to the driver, the investigating officer observed signs of intoxication from the driver, the individual was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Middlesex OPP Detachment for further testing.
As a result, Michael NEILL, a 24-year-old from St. Thomas was charged with:
Operation while impaired alcohol and drugs
Operation while impaired blood concentration (80 plus)
A 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day Vehicle Impoundment was initiated as per statute.
The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in St. Thomas on September 17, 2024.
